 Dear Parents,

Welcome to what will be a Fantastic Year!  My name is Mikelyn Donaldson and I will be your child’s second grade teacher this year!  I will be teaching English Language Arts, Writing, Grammar, Spelling, and Social Living to Second Grade.  In your child’s communication folder, you will find the student handbook, which includes information of school policies and procedures for the 2016-2017 school year. I will send home a “weekly” which will include the skills we are working on for that reading week. I will also include test dates and important reminders on the weekly. We have an exciting year ahead that will be filled with lots to explore, experience, and learn!  I hope to be a guide and mentor to your child this year as they embark on a learning journey filled with excitement, challenges, and many learning opportunities.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. My email is mdonaldson@stjames.k12.la.us or you may send a note with your child and I will respond as quickly as possible. Looking forward to a great year!

Classroom Consequences:

Green 1 – Ready to Learn – Students that remain on “G1” will receive two Roar Bucks at the end of the day. They will also receive a sticker to put on an incentive chart. When a student’s incentive chart is full, he/she will be allowed to choose something out of our class treasure box. Students that remain on “G1” for the whole week will be eligible for Student of the Week.

Green 2 – 1st offense – Students that move their clip to “G2” will receive a Roar Buck at the end of the day.

Yellow – 2nd offense – Students that move their clip to “Y” will lose 5 minutes of recess.

Red 1 – 3rd offense – Students that move their clip to “R1” will lose their entire recess.

Red 2 – 4th offense – Students that move their clip to “R2” will be referred to the office.

Students that are observed engaging in school expectations and especially those going above and beyond expectations will receive a Roar Buck as well. Lutcher Elementary’s PBIS team will be acknowledging positive behavior with a variety of incentives on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

Attendance:

Daily attendance for all students, kindergarten to sixth, is mandatory.  Students will not be excused from school except in cases of emergencies.  All work missed by students must be made up within 5 days after returning to school (unless period of illness is extensive).  Excessive absences often result in poor schoolwork.  When an absence is necessary, the parent or guardian should call the school telling the reason for the student’s absence.  Students will have to return a SJ-2 form (white absentee excuse slip) or a doctor’s excuse within two days upon their return to school.  The student is allowed 1 SJ2 form per term.  Even though an absence is excused, it is still considered as a day not present because the child is not physically at school.

Elementary students with five (5) unexcused absences per nine weeks shall receive a grade of N/F (non-sufficient/failure) for the applicable nine-week grading period.  Upon the fifth unexcused day, truancy is notified.  Elementary students with unexcused absences of 10 days per school year shall receive a grade of N/F (non-sufficient/result in failure) for the applicable year.

Exceptions shall be made only in the event of extended personal illness

(i.e., excused absences) verified by a physician or other extenuating circumstances verified by the Parish Supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendance in consultation with the principal and parents/guardian.

THE PARENT MUST COMPLETE AND RETURN AN SJ-2 FORM OR A DOCTOR’S EXCUSE EACH TIME THE STUDENT IS ABSENT.  The principal  will determine if an absence is excused.  School must return this form to the teacher at the end of each nine weeks.

  • Make-up Work:

Make-up work is given to students with excused absences.   If you know in advance that your child will be absent, notify the teacher, and planned assignments will be given.  Arrangements will be made to complete makeup work before school, during recess, or during activity block.  A student with unexcused absences will not be allowed to make up any assignments.
