St. James Parish Schools Remain Closed Through Labor Day

St. James Parish School System will remain closed through Monday, September 06, 2021.  We are still working to assess the damages to our schools and community. Once these assessments are complete; and more information is provided from our local officials, we will update our SJPS community accordingly.  We will continue to provide updates and resources on our website, Facebook page, and call-out system.  

  We extend our hopes and prayers that you, our SJPS families & community, remain safe.

All St. James Parish Schools and Central Office will operate under an early release schedule today to make the necessary preparations for the expected inclement weather associated with Hurricane Ida. All Head Start students will be dismissed at 1:00 pm.  All high school students will be dismissed at 1:30 pm. All elementary students will be dismissed at 2:15 pm.  We will update our SJPS community on possible school closures for next week after meeting with the St. James Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness.  Please check our official district app, website, and Facebook page for continued updates.

St. James Parish Schools Closed



Due to the expected inclement weather associated with Hurricane Zeta, all St. James Parish Schools & offices will be closed Wednesday, October 28, 2020.  All employees are expected work remotely.  Students should engage in virtual learning.  Email and call out communication should be checked.  If we experience power outages, virtual expectations will be postponed.  

Classes are expected to resume on Thursday, October 29, 2020.   If this changes parents will be notified via call-out system, district website, and Facebook.   

Please continue to monitor our website and Facebook page for updates.  Please stay safe and make your best effort to complete virtual learning expectations.

TS Sally Update

     Due to the expected inclement weather associated with Tropical Storm Sally, all St. James Parish schools and offices will be closed Monday, September 14 – Tuesday, September 15, 2020.  All employees are expected work remotely Monday and Tuesday.  Virtual learning will be offered to all SJPS students to the greatest extent possible.  Teachers will update Google Classroom by 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 14, 2020 with virtual expectations.  Email and call out communication should also be checked.  If we experience power outages, virtual expectations will be postponed. Also, any student that is unable to complete assignments will be excused and allowed to make up any missed work.  A decision will be made later concerning the remainder of the week.  

     Please continue to monitor our website and Facebook page for updates.  Please stay safe and make your best effort to complete virtual learning expectations.

Schools Closed

All schools and offices of St. James Public Schools will be closed Monday, August 24 through Thursday, August 27, 2020. This is due to expected inclement weather associated with Hurricane Marco and Tropical Storm Laura. These closures include all in-person classes, virtual classes, and ALL activities.  Teachers and staff are scheduled to report back to work on Friday, August 28, 2020. 


The St. James Parish School Board meeting scheduled for Tuesday, August 25, 2020 and all committee meetings scheduled for Monday, August 24, 2020 and Tuesday, August 25, 2020 are also cancelled.


We are working closely with our state & local officials in monitoring the projected paths of both Hurricane Marco & Tropical Storm Laura.  We will continually update our SJPS Community as we receive the latest information.  Please continue to check our website and Facebook page for updates.

The Beginning of the Year:

§  We anticipate beginning school according to the SJPS hybrid model (Model 2).  In this model, students will attend school two days per week.  The first day of school for students in Group A will be Monday, August 10, 2020 and they will attend school on Mondays and Wednesdays.  The first day of school for students in Group B will be Tuesday, August 11, 2020 and they will attend school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  On the other three days of the week, students will be expected to continue new learning through distance instruction under their teachers’ supervision.  Students’ daily plans and communication center will be in Google classroom.  Each student from Pre- Kindergarten through Twelfth Grade will utilize District iPads for distance learning.  The plan of deployment for the iPads will be shared with you.

 Health and Safety:

§  The health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff is our priority.  Students will be expected to maintain physical distancing.  Our groups will remain small and in accordance with district guidelines.  Students in third grade will wear masks while at school.  Sanitization processes will be ongoing.

Food and Nutrition:

§  Until the phase changes, students will have breakfast in small groups in classrooms.  For lunch, students will be able to eat in designated areas within the cafeteria and gym.  These areas are portioned to where the static group remains at their designated area.  There is a specific entrance and exit for the group entering and exiting.  All areas will be sanitized and cleaned thoroughly before the next group enters.  Students will also receive meals for the days they will be home for distance learning.

 Orientation and First Day of School:

§  A back-to-school video will be available on our school website during the week of August 3.  This pre-recorded video will be a way in which you and your child will be able to view the classroom, procedures, and meet your child’s teacher. 

§  Uniforms ordered online may be picked-up between 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. on the following days: Tuesday, August 4, 2020 through Friday, August 7, 2020.

§  School Supplies If you ordered online school supply packs they have been received, tagged to the student, and delivered to your child’s classroom.  Students who did not order online supplies are to bring their supplies on their first day of school either August 10th if schedule A, or August 11th if schedule B.

Academy Hours

Beginning Time . . . . . ..  8:05 a.m.                          Dismissal . . . . . . .3:15 p.m.

Students are permitted on the academy grounds beginning at 7:35 a.m. 

Morning Procedures:

§  For students riding in a car, they will drop off in front of school under the canopy.  Student’s temperature will be taken. If the student’s temperature is 100.4°F or above, the parent will need to take the student home.  If the temperature is below 100.4°F, the student will be given hand sanitizer and asked to proceed to their homeroom.   

§  For students arriving on the bus, the bus will drop off on the North King Avenue entrance.  Upon arrival at school, the student’s temperature will be taken.  If the student’s temperature is 100.4°F or above, the student will be directed to the “Wellness (Sick) Room” and a parent will be notified to come and get the student.  If the student’s temperature is under 100.4°F, the student will be given hand sanitizer and asked to proceed to their homeroom.


§  All students are dismissed at 3:15 p.m.  Students will have their temperature checked and given hand sanitizer prior to leaving their homeroom.  If a student’s temperature is 100.4°F or above, the student will be directed to the sick room and a parent will be notified to come and get the student.  If the student’s temperature is under 100.4°F, the student will be given hand sanitizer and asked to proceed to the bus or to the car area.

§  Buses will be loaded on North King Avenue.  Bus riders will be dismissed as the buses arrive, one load at a time.  Bus students will be called to load buses in an organized manner. 

§  Carpool students will remain in their house until called.  Cars are to drive up under the canopy and at that time, the student will be called to come to the front.  This process will be slower than the normal procedure.  Please have patience and be careful of children. 

 §  Parents will not be allowed to “walk up” and get children nor wait in the visitors parking lot.   We need to maintain a safe environment.  If you are picking up in car pool, you must go through the car pool line.

Dress Code Regulations

§  The policies in the handbook and district manual will need to be followed.  In addition, if there is a virtual meeting, students will be required to be in uniform for the meeting.  Student will need to sit in front of a blank wall. 

§  Masks will be required for anyone riding a bus.  Any student 8 years and older will be required to wear a mask.  There will be a designated spot for children to sit alone in each classroom that will allow the student to remove the mask briefly.  Students under 8 are encouraged to wear a mask especially during transition times.  Masks will follow the district’s guidelines. *Solid colored gray, black, white, and school logo masks are permitted.

§  All students riding a bus must wear a mask.  Students will be assigned designated seats.  If a student does not comply with the mask guideline or stays in designated seat, the student may lose the privilege of riding the bus.  Once again, the main concern is the safety of all.
